The Latin Union, comprising France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland, was founded in the mid-19th century. One crucial component was a common currency. Each of the members minted coins that were equivalent in size and weight and were to be used within the Union. Austria was also intended to become a member, but was unable to achieve the required monetary criteria for entry. Despite this, starting in 1870 an 8 guilder coin (= 20 francs or 8 florins) and a 4 guilder coin (= 10 francs or 4 florins) were minted and resembled the gold coins of the Union in every detail. Guilders were minted until 1872.

According to §25c of the German VAT law (UstG) investment gold is tax exempt.
