The “Koala”, the Australian platinum bullion coin, was struck by the Perth Mint between 1988 and 2000. The obverse of the coin displays a motif that changes each year. The value side – like other coins of the Commonwealth – features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The coin was generally produced only as a “proof set”. Koala coins produced after 2001 display a changing motif instead of the Queen and can thus not be classified with the original series. The platinum Koala was minted in limited numbers and is thus very much sought after.
